這首歌是蘇珊?薇格（Suzanne Vega） 在她常去的街角的一家叫做 Tom's Restaurant 的咖啡店用早餐時的隨寫。整首歌其實非常簡單，用一般的口語將捕捉到的一些生活剪影呈現出來。從薇格走進湯姆的店裡等候咖啡開始，許多現代都會單身上班族走進類似咖啡早餐店時都有的尋常經驗，如店員與熟識客人的親密招呼、窗外對著透明玻璃整理褲襪的女士、腦裡偶然閃過的過往記憶，都在薇格乾淨又有點磁性的清唱嗓音中，被速寫成了這一首可能是有史以來被翻唱改編最多的一首小品
這種在晨雨中獨自走進紐約咖啡老店，「偷得都市半（小）時閒」的心境，有點慵懶，人單影隻的獨處也有點落寞，然而卻也非常爵士。在窗外淋溼頭髮，慌亂地整理儀容的落湯女的對照下，湯姆的店裡的薇格有一份都會生活中難得的靜謚。報紙裡充斥的社會新聞永遠只報導我們司空見慣的都市殘酷現實與疏離的舊聞，一如大多數人，薇格寧可轉向娛樂版面。然而都市有其吊詭的美，隨時就在咖啡館的大窗戶裡展覽。端起一杯咖啡，轉頭看向窗外，那是一幅一幅的浮世繪。若是像薇格在這都市仍在半睡半醒的朦朧時刻，讓穿過逐漸紛擾的大街傳來的教堂鐘聲，混合著咖啡飄起來的香味，勾引出「很久很久」（Once upon a time）以前的愛情往事，那就是莫內筆下的印象派了。
薇格在歌曲末尾，早餐結束前，因教堂鐘聲而聯想到了男友的聲音，懷念起「雨還沒有下之前」（二人未分開前）與男友共午夜野餐的熱戀情景。此時看到眼前溼答答依舊不斷落下的雨，不免心生怨意。這裡的抱怨，其實同時也可能是對於又要趕車去開始一天忙碌生活時的一份「早晨憂鬱」（morning blue），外頭的雨只是適時的成為她宣洩心情的代罪羔羊。
另外，這首清唱版的歌因為旋律十分吸引人受到各國愛好者的翻唱，或改動歌詞，或重新編曲混因，以不同風格呈現。在唱片公司發現這些版本後，薇格並沒有採取法律行動將它們終結，反而把它們結集成之前介紹的名為《湯姆專輯》（Tom's Album） 的CD唱片。內容除了先前介紹的波斯灣戰爭版，還有帶有生活哲思的北歐版、有細膩描寫疼愛女兒卻對於女兒的真實生活面完全無知的父親的饒舌版、有混合美國舊影集《太空仙女戀》的主題曲作為專播老電影與影集的電視台開播廣告的懷舊版、還有加勒比海地區翻唱的雷鬼版，都非常有意思。薇格本人非常喜歡 DNA 這個團所混音的舞曲版，決定將它以單曲發行，以致這首歌更加廣受歡迎。後來在2001年的她的精選集（The Best of Suzanne Vega: Tried and True）裡所收錄的＜湯姆的店＞就是這個混音舞曲版。
